The Challenge
Education in sub‑Saharan Africa faces deep, structural challenges. Despite several gains made in this sector, over 93 million children and youth aged six to 17 remain out of school, the highest number globally. Only 65% of children complete primary school, and fewer than 60% complete secondary education. Learning poverty is critical, with 89% of 10-year-olds unable to read and understand a simple text. Infrastructure gaps are widespread with fewer than a third of schools having access to electricity or clean water. Girls are especially affected with 23% of girls and 36% of adolescent girls are out of school, often due to poverty, menstruation-related stigma, or early responsibilities at home.
How we help
